Pickleball isn’t just about fast hands and athleticism—it’s also about strategy. Much like chess, the game is won by identifying opportunities, adjusting when needed, and outsmarting your opponents. Two of the most important strategic skills you can develop are learning to exploit weaknesses and making adjustments throughout the match.
Tip 1: Exploit Your Opponents’ Weaknesses
At the start of every game, one of your first priorities should be to identify your opponents’ weaknesses. You can do this by forcing them to hit a variety of shots early, drops, drives, dinks, counters, and speedups, and watching how they respond.
Take note of:
- Which shots they miss consistently.
- Which shots they can execute, but not with control or confidence.
- Which shots they hit well that make you uncomfortable.
Once you spot a weakness, build your strategy around it. If an opponent struggles with low dinks, keep them in dink rallies. If they mishit drives, feed them opportunities to prove it again. Make them hit the shots they don’t like until they prove they can adjust.
Tip 2: The Importance of Making Adjustments
While exploiting weaknesses is powerful, no strategy lasts forever. Good players will eventually adjust to cover up their weaknesses, and if you keep doing the same thing, they’ll flip the advantage back on you.
This is where adaptability comes in. If your opponent closes off a weakness, you’ll need to:
- Shift your shot selection.
- Change court positioning to create new angles.
- Use stacking or switching to get more forehands on the ball.
- Find a different area of their game to pressure.
At the same time, be aware of your own weaknesses. If your opponents are targeting them, don’t panic, make your own adjustments to hide that weakness and lean into your strengths.
Pickleball strategy is an ebb and flow. The players who adjust the quickest often come out on top.
Winning in pickleball isn’t just about hitting the ball harder or faster. It’s about playing smart, spotting your opponents’ weaknesses, pressuring them until they crack, and making adjustments when the game shifts. Master these two strategies, and you’ll see your results improve almost immediately.
