Once you’ve established your USA Pickleball Player Skill Level and start playing in more advanced or competitive events, you’ll likely need a pickleball rating. Your rating reflects your current playing ability using results from organized play. Most systems use a scale from 2.0 (beginner) to 8.0 (professional) to help you find appropriate competition and track progress. Today, two widely used ratings in pickleball are DUPR (The Official Exclusive Rating System used across all USA Pickleball-Owned Events) and UTR Pickleball Rating.

How to Get a Pickleball Rating

Your rating is a snapshot of your current ability based on verified play. It guides event placement, helps you find fair competition, and lets you track improvement over time. To receive a rating, first create a free profile with DUPR. You can create your profile on the DURP website or download their Apple App or Google Play App.

Next play in verified matches, such as sanctioned tournaments, leagues, or club sessions that submit results to the provider. Be sure to log your results in the app and have opponents confirm them. Ensure that your name, partner, and scores are accurate and match your profile so that the system can accurately attribute the results. After your first several verified results, the algorithm will publish an initial singles and/or doubles rating (on the 2.0–8.0 scale) and will update automatically as more verified results are processed.

How to Increase Your Rating

Win against equal or stronger opponents. Results versus similar or higher-rated players usually move the needle the most.
With DUPR, your rating moves up when you perform better than expected—not just when you win or lose.
Play more verified matches. A steady volume of recent results makes your rating more accurate and less volatile.
Choose the right division. Enter levels that match your current ability; balanced, competitive matches yield the best rating signals.
Prioritize clean, confirmed scoring. Accurate, timely score reporting prevents mismatches or missing data that can slow progress.
Train the fundamentals that swing close games: deep serve/return, third-shot choices (drop/drive), consistent dinks and resets, smart shot selection, and fewer unforced errors.
DUPR Verified Events count 50% more towards ratings.
Stay active. Many systems weigh recent performance more than older results, so regular play helps.

What is a rating?

A rating is a single number that estimates your current playing ability, based on verified match results processed by a rating provider’s algorithm.

What rating does USA Pickleball use?

USA Pickleball uses DUPR for it’s Golden Ticket and National Championships as The Official Exclusive Rating System however, USA Pickleball also sanctions tournaments that use either DUPR or UTR ratings.

Do I need a rating to play?

Not for all play. Many clubs and casual events don’t require it, but leagues and tournaments often use ratings for division placement.

How do I get an initial rating?

Create a provider profile (DUPR or UTR), play several verified matches, and make sure results are submitted and confirmed. After enough data, the system will publish your initial Singles and/or Doubles rating.

Are Singles and Doubles ratings separate?

Yes, most providers calculate separate ratings for Singles and Doubles.

How often does my rating update?

It updates whenever new, eligible results are posted and processed by the provider.

What moves my rating the most?

Beating opponents rated equal to or higher than you typically has the biggest impact. Close, competitive matches against appropriate opposition produce the best signals.

In DUPR’s system, ratings moved based on performance vs expectation. It’s not about winning or losing. If you are expected to win 11 – 3, and you win 11 – 8, your rating will move down. In the same case, if you are expected to lose 11- 5 and you lose 11-8, your rating will move up.

Why is my rating volatile at first?

Early on, your rating is provisional, the system adjusts more quickly until you have a larger set of verified results.

Can I lose rating points even if I win?

Depending on the provider’s model, narrow wins over much lower-rated opponents may have little effect, or even a slight dip, because the expected outcome was already a win.
