When should you think about adding shade to your pickleball courts/facility?

New construction is always the easiest and most simple way to add shade, typically shade structures will require major construction to erect a structure covering a court or multiple courts, an open site without hindrance is the best plan if available.

How do I add shade to an existing court/courts?

When looking at existing courts, we have to consider what the goal is for the facility, we need to make sure there is room for our footings and construction equipment, looking at the court layout and spans we need to accomplish, to eliminate columns in locations that could be dangerous to those playing. We would assess the site, understanding the needs of the facility, looking at access for equipment, can we get close to the area with equipment, will the courts be redone after construction, or will it be necessary not to have any damage done to the courts, if necessary , we would use a crane for installation and erection of steel.

What type of fabric will the project require?

  • Are you looking for a waterproof solution, if so, we would go with one of our solid membrane fabrics.
  • Are you looking for temperature reduction, if this is the only requirement, we would use our HDPE shade fabric.

How long is the process from start to finish of installing a shade structure?

Typically, covering one court or several courts with a design that will allow for a free span, to eliminate any columns in or around playing surface, can take approx. 16 – 24 weeks in HDPE Shade Fabric, larger custom structures and Waterproof structures can take approx. 24 – 32 weeks.

How tall should the structure be for Pickleball

This decision would be made by the customer and the overall intended plan for the courts; if they are planning on hosting tournaments, the required clearance would be assessed during the design phase. If the courts were being used for recreational purposes only, bringing the overall height down would help in providing more shade throughout the day.
