Basics of the Third Shot Drop

The third shot drop is one of the most important shots in pickleball. It serves as the strategic bridge between the baseline and the Kitchen line, allowing you and your partner to safely move to the net, where most points are won.

A third shot drop is essentially a soft, controlled shot (like a dink) hit from the baseline that lands in your opponent’s Kitchen. You’ll use it as the serving team, literally on the third shot of the rally, after the serve and return.

When executed correctly, the drop lands softly in your opponent’s Kitchen, forcing them to let it bounce and preventing them from attacking. This neutralizes their advantage and gives you time to advance to the Kitchen line without fear of being hit by a hard volley. In short, mastering the third shot drop helps you regain control of the rally and set up your team for success.

How to Hit a Successful Third Shot Drop

To consistently hit a quality third shot drop, keep these key fundamentals in mind:

1. Find the Right Stance

There are three main stances in pickleball:

  • Open stance: facing directly toward the net.
  • Closed stance: standing sideways, facing the sideline.
  • Semi-open stance: halfway between open and closed.

When hitting a third shot drop, use a semi-open stance. It keeps your movement compact, prevents an oversized backswing, and helps you direct the ball straight toward your target.

2. Keep Your Paddle in Front

Imagine a brick wall right behind your legs, your paddle should never swing past that point. Keeping your paddle in front eliminates excessive backswing, which gives you more control and consistency on the shot.

3. Relax Your Grip

A soft shot requires a soft touch. Hold your paddle loosely, around a three on a scale of one to ten for grip pressure. The tighter you squeeze, the farther the ball will fly. Staying relaxed helps you absorb pace and drop the ball precisely into your opponent’s Kitchen.

The third shot drop is one of the toughest skills to master but one of the most rewarding. With good mechanics, a relaxed grip, and precise placement, you’ll gain the confidence to move forward, control the rally, and win more points at the Kitchen line.
