The reset is one of the most important shots in pickleball. It’s your go-to move when you’re under pressure, helping you slow down the pace of play and recover from a tough defensive position.
A reset is a soft, controlled shot that redirects a hard offensive ball into your opponent’s Kitchen, rather than counterattacking with power. It neutralizes your opponent’s advantage and buys you time to move forward toward the Kitchen line.
Tip 1: How to Execute an Effective Reset
The goal of a reset is control, not power. Here are the fundamentals to focus on:
- Stop your movement before contact. It’s much harder to hit a quality shot while running. If you’re moving, the ball will likely pop up, giving your opponent an easy attack.
- Keep your paddle out in front. This helps you track the ball onto your forehand or backhand side more easily and react quickly to fast drives.
- Use a compact motion. The reset requires zero backswing. Contact the ball in front of your body with a short, controlled push. Any backswing will send the ball sailing too high.
- Loosen your grip. A relaxed grip allows the paddle to absorb pace. A tight grip, on the other hand, will make the ball bounce off too hard.
Think of the reset as your defensive reset button. When you’re stuck in the transition zone and successfully reset the ball into the Kitchen, move forward and reestablish position at the line.
Tip 2: When to Reset vs. When to Attack
Deciding when to hit a reset can be tricky in the middle of a fast-paced rally, but there’s one simple rule that can guide you:
- If the ball is traveling down toward you, reset it. It’s nearly impossible to attack effectively from below the net. Trying to attack these shots often results in a pop-up, giving your opponent an easy putaway.
- If the ball is traveling up toward you, attack it. Shots that rise to your shoulder or higher are prime opportunities to go on offense and hit down toward your opponents’ feet.
Remember: defend when the ball is below the net, attack when it’s above it. This simple distinction will help you make smarter shot choices and control the rhythm of every rally.
The reset is your safety net, it turns chaos into calm. By mastering this defensive tool, you’ll be able to handle fast-paced drives, transition smoothly to the Kitchen, and turn defense into offense with confidence.
