That leadership continues with the opening of the annual rule proposal process for the 2027 Rulebook, an approach that sets USA Pickleball apart from nearly every other sport.
Each year, USA Pickleball invites its members to directly contribute to the evolution of the game through a structured and transparent rulemaking process. This unique feedback loop reinforces the organization’s commitment to not only governing the sport but doing so in partnership with the community it serves.
How the Rule Change Process Works
USA Pickleball members at the Challenger and Champion levels are eligible to submit proposed rule changes, edits, or new rules for consideration in the 2027 Rulebook. The submission window opens April 1, 2026, and closes June 1, 2026.
Proposals can include:
- Edits to existing rules for clarity or consistency
- New rule additions
- Recommendations to eliminate existing rules
All submissions are made through the official Rules portal at rules.usapickleball.org, where each proposal is assigned a tracking number for full visibility throughout the process.
Upon submission, members receive a digital confirmation, and USA Pickleball volunteers may provide guidance to help refine proposals ensuring they are clearly written and aligned with the structure of the rulebook.
Public Input and Transparency
Following submission, all proposed rule changes are published in the New Rulebook Database (NRD), where they are open for public comment through June 15, 2026. Anyone, not just members, can weigh in, offering feedback that becomes part of the formal review process.
This open-comment period reflects USA Pickleball’s commitment to transparency and reinforces its role as the sport’s governing authority balancing community input with structured oversight.
Committee Review and Governance
Beginning in June, the USA Pickleball Rules Committee will review each proposal alongside public comments. Each submission is evaluated and voted on with one of three outcomes:
- Approved as submitted
- Approved with amendments
- Disapproved
All decisions, including rationale and any modifications, are documented and made publicly available in the NRD.
Following committee review, all proposed changes are submitted to the USA Pickleball Board of Directors for final approval—ensuring that every rule adopted reflects both expert oversight and the long-term best interest of the sport.
From Proposal to Official Rulebook
Approved changes will be incorporated into the 2027 Rulebook, which is scheduled to be published by December 20, 2026. This early release provides players, referees, and stakeholders time to review and prepare ahead of the official effective date of January 1, 2027.
The 2027 Rulebook will be available for purchase on or around January 1, 2027.
A Proven, Community-Driven Process
Last year, nearly 200 rule proposals were submitted, ranging from minor editorial updates to significant rule additions, demonstrating both the scale of engagement and the continued growth of the sport.
While USA Pickleball maintains its role as the official authority on the rules of pickleball, this process ensures that the voices of players and stakeholders remain central to how the game evolves.
