If you’re just stepping onto the pickleball court, there are a few basics to success that every beginner should know. Simple habits like keeping your paddle up, staying in an athletic stance with bent knees, taking short backswings, hitting the ball out in front of your body, and exercising patience will immediately improve your game. But beyond mechanics, success in pickleball comes down to positioning. being in the right place at the right time.
Why Positioning Matters
In pickleball, most points are won at the Non-Volley Zone line (the Kitchen line). Because of this, the general rule of thumb is to work your way up to the Kitchen line as soon as possible, whether you’re serving or receiving. The closer you are to the Kitchen line, the more control you’ll have over rallies.
The Two-Bounce Rule
Pickleball has a unique rule that shapes positioning: the two-bounce rule.
- The serve must bounce.
- The return of serve must bounce.
This means:
- Serving team: Stay back at the baseline after serving, since you’re not allowed to volley the return. Give yourself space for the bounce, then work forward after your third shot.
- Returning team: Only the player receiving the serve should start behind the baseline. The non-receiving partner should already be at the Kitchen line, ready to apply pressure.
How to Move Up Effectively
When advancing from the baseline to the Kitchen line, you can be aggressive (rushing forward after your third shot) or methodical (moving up only after a strong shot). Either way, remember these three keys:
- Follow the ball. Move in sync with the flight of the pickleball to cover the most likely return angles.
- Split step. Just before your opponents hit, take a small hop to reset your balance and prepare to react.
- Stay linked with your partner. Maintain about 6–8 feet of spacing so you don’t leave open gaps on the court.
Avoid the Transition Zone
The area between the baseline and the Kitchen line is called the transition zone (sometimes called “No Man’s Land”). While you’ll pass through it when moving forward, it’s not a place you want to linger. In this zone, it’s easy for opponents to hit hard, downward shots at your feet. The goal is always to move through it quickly and establish yourself at the Kitchen line.
Pickleball is about positioning as much as shot-making. Master these basics, and you’ll give yourself the best chance to win points and enjoy the game.
