How to Master Topspin Drops

Once you’ve mastered the traditional third shot drop, it’s time to level up your transition game with a topspin drop. This advanced shot adds a layer of offense to your soft game, helping you stay aggressive while still maintaining control.

Topspin naturally brings the ball down, which allows you to swing harder without hitting long. It’s a great way to apply pressure, keep your opponent guessing, and move confidently toward the Kitchen line.

Tip 1: How to Hit a Topspin Drop

The first step in learning the topspin drop is understanding how spin is created. Spin is generated based on the paddle’s direction at the moment of contact. When your paddle moves upward through the ball, it creates forward rotation, which is topspin.

To execute a topspin drop:

  1. Start like a regular drop. Keep your paddle in front of your body, no big backswing.
  2. Drop the paddle tip. As you start your forward motion, lower the paddle tip toward the ground.
  3. Brush up the back of the ball. Swing from low to high, rotating your paddle face upward as you make contact with the bottom half of the ball.
  4. Follow through in front of your chest. Stop your follow-through early, don’t let it extend up to your shoulder, or you’ll risk sending the ball too high.

The goal is to create spin with a smooth brushing motion, not power. Done correctly, the ball will arc over the net, dip quickly, and land softly in your opponent’s Kitchen, low and unattackable.

Tip 2: Stay Grounded for Control

If your topspin drops are sailing too high, your body may be the problem, not your paddle. Many players “pop up” with their legs as they swing, which raises their paddle too quickly and sends the ball upward.

To fix this:

  • Stay grounded. Keep your feet planted throughout the swing.
  • Bend your knees and hold that position. Don’t extend upward too early.
  • Use your shoulder and forearm, not your legs, to generate lift and spin.

By maintaining a steady base and a controlled, low-to-high paddle path, you’ll produce clean topspin that stays low, dips fast, and gives you time to advance to the Kitchen line.

The topspin drop blends finesse with aggression, it’s a key step in evolving from a consistent player to a strategic threat. With practice, this shot will give you more options in transition, letting you move forward confidently while keeping your opponent off balance.
